A multi-collector (MC) inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICPMS) was used in combination with an Excimer (193 nm) laser to carry out in situ U-Pb dating of zircons. High performance twovolume sample cell provided unmatched laser ablated aerosol transportation efficiency resulting in reducing laser-related down-hole fractionation. Three wellcharacterized natural zircon reference standards (Harvard zircon 91500, GJ-1 zircon, Plesovice) were repeatedly measured in different sessions to evaluate the analytical figures of merits. Precision of <1% was achieved for spot sizes 20 μm with accuracies well within 2% of the reference values for these standards. Zircons from MCT Zone in the inner Lesser Himalaya reveal a highly discordant Palaeo-proterozoic (1901 ± 11 Ma) magmatic crystallization age inferred from the upper intercept in the concordia plot. The 207Pb/206Pb ages are also internally consistent with the disconcordia age with a weighted mean of 1900 ± 10 Ma and in turn suggest a major phase of Palaeo-proterozoic magmatic activity along the northern margin of Indian craton, while Early Miocene (~25 Ma) Pb loss in zircon inferred from lower intercept in disordria may be related to tectono-thermal activity along MCT.Keywords

Superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavities would form important part of the proposed Indian Spallation Neutron Source and Accelerator Driven System. The high beta 650 MHz SRF cavity would be enclosed in a cylindrical vessel to hold liquid helium (LHe). Titanium (Ti) is being considered as the material of construction of helium vessel. The LHe inlet supply line and return helium gas pipe line of the helium vessel would be made of 316L stainless steel (SS). This requires a bi-metallic tubular transition joint between Ti and 316LSS, operating at LHe temperature. Vacuum brazing and explosive welding are potential processes for joining these two dissimilar metals, as fusion welding leads to extensive cracking.
In the present experimental study, vacuum brazing was performed to join Ti-pipe/316LSS flange with BVAg8 braze filler metal (BFM). Notable features of the process include use of (i) 5-10 μm nickel electro-plating as a diffusion barrier on SS part for preventing possible iron migration towards titanium while improving surface wettability for BFM and (ii) use of 304 SS plug, shrunk fit into Ti-pipe, for achieving dimensional and profile accuracy of Ti-pipe during machining while also controlling joint gap during brazing process. The brazed joint displayed uniform joint thickness and acceptable level of hermeticity (helium leak rate 2 x 10-10mbar.lit/s) and also sustained six thermal cycles between 293 K and 77 K. Shear strength of Ti-SS brazed specimens, made in sandwich configuration, was found to be in the range of 50-60 MPa, with failure occurring at Ti/braze interface.

Kornerupine, although a rare mineral, has been reported from several locations around the world in various types of aluminomagnesian Proterozoic rocks subjected to amphibolite and granulite facies metamorphism. Here we report the occurrence of kornerupine in quartzo-feldspathic gneisses near Kunjan town located in the southwestern part of Salem district, Tamil Nadu, India. These kornerupine granulites show well-preserved retrogression texture, involving hydration reactions which helped develop the various mineral assemblages. The common stable assemblage in these granulites is orthopyroxene–cordierite–kornerupine–biotite–spinel–K-feldspar–plagioclase. The P–T conditions of these granulites have been derived using the winTWQ program, which gives results of ~800°C and ~6 kbar for kornerupine-bearing assemblage. The high P–T assemblage reported from this area bears a significant relationship with the metamorphic history and exhumation of the Salem–Namakkal blockKeywords
